A picture is worth a thousand words.

The following is a small portfolio of examples that should provide an idea of our capabilities.

Catalog Choice — www.catalogchoice.org

Catalog Choice We designed, developed and maintain Catalog Choice for a group of environmental non-profits in the United States, to help American consumers manage their mail preferences. On track to register over one million users in its first year, managing over 10 million catalog subscriptions, the project has been a tremendous success. Since launch, the site has seen a conversion ratio of over 70% (literally seven out of every 10 unique visitors have signed up), and has become one of the top 100 Ruby on Rails sites in the world.

Google/O’Reilly Where 2.0 Map — en.oreilly.com/where2008/

O'Reilly Where 2.0 Working with Google and O’Reilly, we designed and developed a map application allowing visitors to geographically browse the attendees and speakers participating in the 2008 O’Reilly Where 2.0 conference.

Marek Lieberberg Konzertagentur — www.mlk.com

MLK For more than 10 years, we have provided web application development and operations for one of Europe’s largest and most influential entertainment promoters. In addition to their corporate website, summer festival site and photo sharing site, we have developed (and continue to evolve) an amazing back-end content management and business operations system.

ARTS (Anomaly Report Tracking System)

We developed a large-scale issue reporting and resolution management system for the European Space Agency. ESA use this system to manage problem reports, change requests and even minutes-of-meetings, across more than 50 projects (ranging from satellite missions to station equipment), and supporting more than 700 users. We subsequently commercialized the product, and have since licensed it to other satellite operators.

Henderson & Henderson LLC — www.thehendersonbros.com

In the beginning.

MakaluMedia GmbH was founded in 1997, when Matt Henderson and his wife Pino de la Fuente decided to leverage their experience as engineers at the European Space Agency, to form a small company providing systems engineering, development and consultancy within the space sector.

The company’s first major project was the development of the embedded software running within ESA’s next-generation satellite tracking system, the IFMS. In parallel, the company began to expand in the area of spacecraft operations engineering consultancy within both ESA, and another European satellite operator, EUMETSAT.

Growth.

The success of the IFMS system at ESA, and the reputation of the company’s growing team of consultants established MakaluMedia as a serious and reliable provider in the European space industry, allowing the company to grow, and to win further contracts at ESA, EUMETSAT and, later, EUTELSAT.

The company also began to diversify into the area of web- and internet-based system design, development and operation, leveraging its technical and management experience gained in the space sector, to win contracts with important industry customers such as Germany’s leading entertainment agency, and the city government of Darmstadt, Germany.

In 2004, the company diversified again, into the area of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) product development and sale. Its first product, ARTS, is an advanced issue and action management system in use by more than 700 users at ESA to manage problem reporting and resolution across more than 50 missions and projects. Its second product, CRS, is a powerful system configuration reporting tool in use by several manufactures of space ground segment systems.

Today.

Today, MakaluMedia GmbH is a successful SME (Small- to Medium-sized Enterprise) within the European space industry, developing and maintaining advanced software systems, and providing a broad range of engineering consultancy. Most recently, the European Space Agency confirmed its confidence in the company through the award of two five-year consultancy frame contracts — representing the largest success of the company to date, and ensuring its steady growth over the next five years.

In 2005, MakaluMedia formed a sister company in Spain, and opened an office on the southern mediterranean coast, in the city of Marbella. While the group in Germany focuses on activities in the space sector, the group in Spain focuses on the areas of web-application development, interface- and interactivity design.

What is CRS?

CRS is a straightforward solution for a complex problem: the maintenance of the hardware and software configuration data.

Maintaining the configuration information of a large and complex system, perhaps geographically distributed, is a very challenging task. Normally, even a complex and ad-hoc designed database application does not provide an end-to-end solution and therefore some of the steps, typically the data-entry, must be manually executed leaving space for mistakes and misalignments. The amount of information is normally relevant and therefore any manual intervention is long and error prone.

CRS in One Sentence

CRS allows to simply press a button and the complete configuration management report of your system is generated in XML format

CRS is not only a database application for the configuration management; CRS is not only a tool that allows displaying and browsing the Product Tree and searching among the configuration data. CRS has some unique features that allow automatically fetching the configuration data directly from the system under configuration control.

CRS and the European Space Agency

In year 2003, the European Space Agency (ESA) entrusted MakaluMedia GmbH with the development of a software tool for the on-line reporting of configuration information of the ESA Ground Station’s hardware and software.

The project was based on the following idea: the only solution to reliably report the configuration information of an arbitrary complex Product Tree (PT) is to fetch such information directly from the Configuration Items (CI) of the target system.

CRS has been delivered in year 2004 and deployed on all ESA Ground Stations. It is now considered Operational Software. The XML reports are retrieved, compared and analyzed either locally at the station site or at the Operations Control Centre in ESOC, Darmstadt, Germany.

In the next future it is foreseen that all station’s sub-systems will provide on-line configuration reporting capabilities and therefore an interface to CRS.

CRS Architecture

CRS is based on two modules: (a) the CRS Core Agent (CCA), a daemon that provides the core services, and (b) the MMI, a web-based application that can connect to any CCA. The task of each CCA is to fetch, report and manage the configuration information of the locally defined CIs like hard-disk, operating system and patch level, locally installed software systems and components, hardware boards, devices, etc.

Moreover, one or more Core Agents can be defined to be part of the CIs of another CCA at higher level, this allows to build up a hierarchy of CCAs, perhaps spanning over a large number of sub-systems, and to create an arbitrary complex Product Tree. The following figure is an example of the CRS hierarchy.

  CRS Hierarchy

For instance, one CCA could be installed on each facility of the primary ground segment reporting the configuration information for that facility; another CCA could be installed on one of the main servers of the control room, and connected to all facility’s CCAs reporting the entire configuration of the primary segment.

In the same way another set of CCAs could be installed on the backup segment providing the configuration information of the entire segment.

Optionally, a CCA could also be installed at Site level and connected to both the primary and backup segment. The process can be iterated in both directions towards higher or lower levels.

Retrieval of the Configuration Data

CRS was specifically designed to be completely independent from the sub-systems under its control, this means that the retrieval of the configuration data is achieved through well-defined interfaces. The internal architecture of the CCA is based on following three software layers:

This architecture provides a very high degree of configurability and flexibility which allow CRS to retrieve configuration data from virtually any kind of software and hardware without requiring modification of the CRS code itself.

Augmentations

For attributes that cannot be retrieved automatically, CRS can store the manually inserted values and add them transparently to the report when it is generated.

ARTS Screenshot Collage

ARTS is a powerful software tool that facilitates the lifecycle of “issues” (Change Requests, Bug Reports, Anomaly Reports, Software Problem Reports, etc.) and the related “actions” required to resolve them.

The system was developed by MakaluMedia for the European Space Agency (ESA), and presently supports issue and action management across more than 50 concurrent missions and projects, to more than 700 registered users.

The web based system is now available as a commercial product from MakaluMedia, and has already been adopted within the space industry by other key operators, such as EUMETSAT.

Learn more about ARTSFrom its highly usable interface, to its powerful searching and filtering, to its native PDF report generation, to its email/XML-based communication interface allowing issue and action delegation between systems, ARTS is truly unique in the marketplace.
